Padre Peralta's School

The founder of this school, priest José Francisco Peralta was born in Cartago in 1778. His father Mr. José María Vega was the first State Leader when the Central America's Indepnedence was established. Befoere Cartago suffered 1910's earthquake, the school acquired a land of its own. Previously the board had rented several places for the institution.

It is located between streets 8th and 10th, and second Avenue; two and a half blocks away from Cartago's Ruins, east way over national road. The exact date in which the school started working in uncertain, but it was soon after the death of Priest Peralta.

Before the earthquake stroke Cartago in 1910, the school got a land of its own. Previously, the Board had rented several locations. The Municipality, ruled by Mr. Manuel de Jesús Jiménez donated the house in which the school is still working nowadays. Due to the earthquake consequences the school stopped its work for six years. The money saved during those years allowed the construction of a new building.

On September 30, 1917 it is held the inauguration of the new building. Nowadays the school is in the same place, its has gone through some modifications to provide a better service but its original structure is preserved and in great conditions. The founder of this school, priest José Francisco Peralta was born in Cartago in 1778.

His father Mr José María Vega was the first State Leader when declaring Central America's independence; and his mother Mrs. Ana Benita López Corral. When he was young, he moved to Nicaragua where he prepared himself as a priest in the year 1821. He was a great speaker and he worked hard on it. In 1835 he fiercely foungth against Braulio Carrillo's goverment, which intended to erase religious holidys and to suppress tithe. Peralta died on September 11, 1844 at age 56; there days after he had an accident. He loved youth, sohe trid to protect it and when he died he left some money to build a free educational center thet had as its basic teachings Christian doctrine.

That is how became the honourable founder of the first religious school in Costa Rica.
