Turrialba Volcano
National Park


It is located 24km northeast from Turrialba. Its name was established on 1955. It is very high, 3340 meters over the sea and it shares Irazú Volcano base, so they are recognized as twin volcanoes.

This volcano has three defined craters, as well many other disfigured by the constant volcanic activity. The central crater is very deep (50 meters). At its sides, there are two cones: Cerro Tiendilla and Cerro Armando. Nowadays there is activity with gases and steam with some azufre. The last eruptive cycle was between 1864 and 1866.

There is an average temperature of 16o and the rain is between 3000 and 4000 mm by year.

The flora is varied, it has a tropical forest and a premontano forest. The forests are always green (due to humidity) with several trees. Among the trees there are the robles and the encinos, also dear’s horn, salvia and ratoncillo. These trees are shelter for the native wild fauna.

Even though, Turrialba Volcano does not possess a variety of fauna, it is most visited for its amazing and beautiful view. It is an area mostly appreciated by the national and the foreign people. It is very representative of Costa Rica’s landscapes.

If you want to go, it is better to use a pick up truck. If not, once you are in the Volcano lowest part, you must walk 4 hours to get to the crater.


How to get there?
There are two ways, by a pick up truck taking the north route parting from Pacayas downtown. Or in any other car take the north route from Pastora in Turrialba, which is located 10km south of the Firefighters Station in Turrialba). Once you get to the coffee shop Danza con Nubes you start going up (it takes from 3 to 4 hours) to get to the crater (3300 msnm).

Recommendations
Get warm before you start walking. Take light clothes and comfortable shoes, sun blocker or umbrellas and take water, fruits, hydrating drinks and a small botiquin. And also pending on the season you should take a coat.

Dont´s
Do not go in drunk, do not take alcohol to the park, do not take animals with you, do not damage plants or any other natural resource from the wild, do not go to limited zones
