Tapantí
Nacional Park


This area known as Tapantí, was before named National Wild Life National Refugee and National Park Tapantí. It is located in Orosi, Paraíso, Cartago.

It is 6080 hectares long and its altitude goes from 1220 to 2560msnm. One of the rainiest zones in Costa Rica, there is a 6500mm annual valuation registered, it even go to 8000mm once. The rainiest period goes to May to October.

Orosi's Big River crosses this area, in wich many other rivers fall. This vital liquid is used to produce hydroelectric energy, and also to supply water to a big portion of the metropolitan area.

National Park Tapanti protects a wide diversity of natural resources. There are around 45 mammal's species, some of them are endangered species such as wild goat, wild rabbit, raccoon, white face monkey, etc.

There are 260 bird's species like quetzals, hawks, turkey hens, parrots, wild hens almong others. Some reptile species like lizards and snakes. There is a total amount of 28 reptile species, and 28 amphibious like salamanders, frogs and toads.

Insects are also very abundant and many of them are still unknown for scientists. Diurnal butterflies have beautiful colors and nocturnal butterflies like Thysania agripina, is considered the biggest butterfly in America and also the biggest from other insects species like wasps, drones and crickets.

Among the flora, we can find oak trees, magnolia, orchids, moss and ferns, just to name a few.

National Park Tapantí is a real home for natural species. In fact is one of the most significant natural places in Costa Rica. If you want to know and appreciate pure natural visit this park and enjoy its natural views.

To get there go to Cartago, continue to Paraíso, Orosi, Rio Macho and Tapanti. The road works throughout the whole year and any vehicle can be used. If you travel by bus, use the bus that goes to Orosi and Río Macho (east side of Capuchinos Priest Church), then walk 9 km.

How to get there?

If you are travelling by private vehicle first, take the road to Cartago, then follow sings towards Paraíso, Orosi, Río Macho and continue through to Tapantí. The road is accessible all year round for all types of vehicles. The Orosi- Rio Macho bus leaves from near church ruins in Cartago, every 30 minutes. In Orosi take a taxi to Tapantí.
If you wish to walk, the distance form Río Macho to Tapantí is 9 kms.
We have a rustic house with capacity for 15 people at the "Finca Los Maestros" ubicated 1 kilometer from Tapantí National Park.

From Monday to Sunday, from 7 am to 5 pm. Information office: (506) 2200-0090

Entrance
Adult foreigners $10 and children $2 .

Recommendations
1.Stay away from the electric power lines. 2. Pick ut the garbabge. 3. Do not play radios or make loud noises which could disturb the tranquility found here. 3. Please stay on the trails. 4. Swimming in the river "Grande de Orosi" is at the visitors own risk. The park assumes no responsability for any problems.

Dont´s
Do not enter the park drunk or with alcoholic beverages, do not bring any kind of pets to the park, do not eat or drink on forbidden areas, do not take plants or any other natural resource from the wild area, do not walk outside of the trails or public zones
