Guayabo National Monument
It is located at the base of Turrialba
Volcano, 11.8 miles northeast of Turrialba
city. Guayabo National Monument is the
most important and biggest archeological
place discovered in Costa Rica. Its extension
is from 217 hectares. It also protects
archeological structures such as roadways,
monticules, bridges, capture tanks and
aqueducts among others.
The
archeological area has 15-20 hectares
long, in which only a small part has been
excavated. Here we can find archeological
features like monticules, roadways, perrons,
open and closed aqueducts, water supply
tanks, tombs, monoliths, and sculptures
that show us a high development on civil
engineering, architecture and urbanism.

As
fir the artistic manifestations, the most
abundant are the graven stones. They are
located throughout the whole archeological
area and they still present inapprehensible
features. Another interesting manifestation
is a carved monolith, which has two common
animals for our country: the jaguar and
the lizard. There were also discovered
nine stone sculptures located in the monticule;
they also found a fragment of what appears
to be a ceremonial staff, in the water
supply tank. Due to the big importance
that water had for the Indians, these
left some carved stones with spirals shapes
that symbolize this precious liquid.
Thanks
to the discoveries made here, archeologists
can determine that the pre-Columbian city
was occupied by a variety of specialized
people, they were probably directed by
a chief, who practice political and religious
power all over the region. What is still
unknown is why the abandonment or extermination
of this pre-Columbian group before the
Spanish Conquest. Among the given hypothesis
of this disappearance are: diseases and
wars.
Anastasio
Alfaro, an explorer and naturalist, who
discovered (at the end of the last century)
some archeological features in Guayabo.
After several years of pillage and vandalism
in 1968 archeologist Carlos Aguilar Piedra,
starts systematic digging to rescue that
cultural patrimony.
The
Monument provides a specialized tourist
guide, who explains history all the way
over the trails. The tour through the
paths last between 40minutes and an hour.
It has 20 divisions that facilitate the
comprehension of the place: flora, fauna,
and representative elements of the place
(monticules, monoliths, roadways, aqueducts,
etc.)
Even
though natural richness is not a main
element in Guayabo Monument it has his
own characteristics. First it is a rainy
forest; it has thick foliage, which is
always green. Among the forest species
you can find magnolia, Maria’s cedar,
etc. they are covered by big amounts of
small plants such as orchids.
Some birds are distinguished among the
fauna: toucans, carpenter birds, parrots.
There are also some mammals such as armadillos,
rabbits, coyotes, slowpokes, and squirrels.
Another frequent animal species are snakes,
frogs, lizards and butterflies.
Nevertheless
this monument importance does not come
from the flora and fauna, but from its
archeological value. This place holds
memories and history of a not well know
era. But thanks to the protection we are
able to research and get to know our past.
In
the park you will find a label written
by Seathl Chief (1854) with this message
“you must show your kids that this
soil that they step now represent our
grand parents’ ashes. Teach them
that the ground is filled with our own
blood and we must respect it… the
land does not belong to the mankind, we
belong to the land…everything lived
by the land will occur to the world’s
offspring. The men did not write life’s
design, they are just a pen. |
